On Sunday 14th September, Medway Towns Rowing Club was proud to field 11 crews at the Cambridge Autumn Regatta, hosted by the welcoming Cambridge ’99 Rowing Club.
Medway crews showed their diversity and depth, with racing spanning from our youngest junior (age 13) right through to our experienced Masters squad. It was a brilliant day to demonstrate the inclusion and strength of our club. The weather gave us the full British rowing experience: glorious sunshine through the morning before the heavens opened at lunchtime, drenching crews in heavy rain!
Highlights
Junior Success – Congratulations to our J14 competitor Erika for storming to victory in her race.
Women’s 4x+ (Natalie, Charlotte, Jess, Holly, with Julie coxing) – The crew battled through heavy rain in style. Luckily, training in Medway’s usual gales and downpours gave them the edge – they hardly noticed the weather!
Men’s 4x – delivered strong performances against tough competition, even with a hefty nine-second handicap!
Single Scullers – Robin Philpott demonstrated power in tough race. Ruta taking her semi-final win but just missing out in a very competitive final (and honestly, who put those boys in the middle of the river?!). We also had our J16 girls in singles, with Dot, Harriet showing technically brilliant sculling and Will at J17 putting in strong performance. Everyone made us very proud.
Doubles & Pairs – Martin and James impressed us by winning both their quarter-final and semi-final before narrowly missing out in the final, and unfortunately our men's pair was disqualified, narrower river compared to Medway to navigate!
A huge congratulations to all who competed and represented Medway at this event. It was a pleasure to experience such a well-run regatta with wonderful facilities in such a beautiful setting.
